Essential for Safe Towing
What else might you need for towing you ask?
Ask you caravan manufacturer or caravan reseller for the caravans wiring diagram.
This will clearly indicate exactly how you car must be wired up to safely and efficiently tow the caravan. But some of the other upgrades your car may need include;
- Grey Isolated Anderson Plug: Is responsible for charging the batteries in your caravan while you drive. We wire them using heavy duty 6B&S cable (Fancy way of saying seriously thick cable) to handle the current that your DC charge will be pulling form the alternator whilst driving. Suitable for lithium charge operations.
- Red Anderson Plug: This is a much smaller sized cable that gives direct power to an Electric Stability Controller commonly shortened to ESC.
- Trailer Plug: Highly likely this is already on your vehicle, it could be round or flat but in most cases needs to be checked for the correct wiring configuration and also may need to be upgraded to a 12 pin flat if you caravan require it.
- Reverse Camera: Your caravan probably has a camera on the rear to assist with backing in, it will usually already be installed with a cable to the front of the caravan, we recommend asking you caravan manufacturer or reseller for the car side of the camera kit prior to picking up the caravan so we can install it at the same time as everything else, saving you time and money.
Towing Slang: Anderson Plug = Ando, Electric Brake Controller = EBS, Electric Sway Controller = ESC, Heavy Duty Cable Between Car and Caravan for Camera Feed = WOZA
Fun fact: If you have a 7 pin on your car but a 12 pin on your caravan it will not work BUT if you have a 12 pin on your car and a 7 pin of your caravan then that will work as your caravan will only require the top 7 pins for power which can be fed from the 12 pin of you car.
What is even better is the we can do all of this for you! We are experts in setting vehicles up for towing caravans.
