Isuzu D-MAX Canopy Fit-Out – Designed from the Ground Up

Isuzu D-MAX Canopy Fit-Out – Designed from the Ground Up

This 2021 Isuzu D-MAX rolled into our workshop ready for a serious power upgrade. The owner, Brad, had one key request: keep the canopy floor clear, pack in plenty of power for induction cooking, and make it as self-sufficient as possible without the need for a caravan.

So, we got to work designing a fully integrated canopy system around those needs. With 200Ah of lithium, a full Redarc Rogue setup, and loads of thoughtful details packed in, this D-MAX is now ready to hit the road and stay off-grid.

The Brief: Compact, Powerful, Easy to Use

Brad’s D-MAX features a Teralume Industries XO jack-off canopy, so space optimisation was critical. We needed to maximise the available room without sacrificing functionality. That meant:

  • Keeping the floor clear

  • Integrating a 200Ah lithium battery (without the bulk)

  • Ensuring high current draw capacity for things like an air fryer

  • Rapid recharge capabilities from alternator power

  • Seamless usability from both sides of the canopy

From there, our product designer Liam custom-built a fully enclosed board that houses everything—battery included—within the headboard wall of the canopy. Every component is neatly mounted, backlit, and easily accessible.

Power System Overview

Invicta Super Slimline 200Ah Lithium Battery

We’ve used our go-to battery for canopy builds, the Invicta 200Ah Super Slimline. It fits snugly into the rear wall of the setup and is fully serviceable with:

  • 5-year replacement warranty

  • Bluetooth connectivity

  • Integrated cell voltage monitoring

  • IEC62619 safety certification

RedArc Manager 50 + RedVision Rogue

To manage power flow from every direction, we installed the Redarc Manager 50 paired with the RedVision Rogue system and touchscreen display. This setup gives Brad complete control over his system—either from the screen or the app.

Key benefits include:

  • Charging from solar, alternator, and 240V mains

  • Solar prioritisation and charging blend

  • Backcharge feature to jump-start from the auxiliary battery

  • Maintenance mode for vehicles left in storage

  • Full system monitoring via the RedVision screen

Extra BCDC 1225 Core Charger

To give the system a boost when needed, we added a second Redarc 25A BCDC Core charger. This allows Brad to pull up to 75A combined when the batteries need a quick recovery charge from the alternator. This is particularly handy when powering both a fridge and freezer in the canopy.

2000W RedArc Inverter

We went with the RedArc RS2 2000W inverter to run household appliances like:

  • Induction cooktops

  • Air fryers

  • Toasters and kettles

This model was chosen over the RS3 to save space in the compact canopy layout, while still offering all the power Brad needs for single high-draw appliances.

Switching & Sockets

The TVMS Rogue gives Brad 10 channels of switching to control:

  • Fridge and freezer

  • Rear lights and canopy lighting

  • Air compressor

  • Water pump

  • GPO outlets on both sides

  • DC-DC charger control

We also installed:

  • Anderson outputs for flexible gear positioning

  • Cigarette, USB-A & USB-C sockets

  • Manual reset circuit breakers for solar and DC systems

Solar Setup

On top of the Bush Company rooftop tent, we mounted a 190W Enerdrive fixed solar panel. We’ve used these extensively—they’re compact, tough, and perform well in Aussie touring conditions.

Rooftop Tent & Jack-Off Canopy Integration

Since the canopy is jack-off, we incorporated a full plug-and-play enclosure for:

  • 120A Anderson input

  • Red Anderson for solar input

  • Grey Anderson for rooftop tent power

  • 6-pin Deutsch plug for lights and camera systems

This allows Brad to remove the canopy without touching any of the wiring or power components.

Lighting & Safety Dave Reverse Camera

Inside the canopy are dimmable Terralume orange bug lights and a Terralume rear floodlight. We also wired in power to the rooftop tent and installed a Safety Dave rearview camera to replace the now-useless factory mirror.

This camera gives a full-width rear view while driving and automatically switches to the factory camera for hitching when reversing.

Final Thoughts

This Isuzu D-MAX is now a fully self-contained touring setup, capable of powering high-draw appliances, fridges, and lighting—all while keeping the layout clean and floor space clear. With full control from RedVision and enough power to handle extended off-grid stays, it’s ready for big Aussie adventures.
