Ultimate Toyota Prado 250 Series Touring Build

The Toyota Prado 250 Series has already made a big impression, offering modern comforts with rugged LandCruiser DNA. But to turn it from a comfortable family SUV into a fully capable touring vehicle, it needs the right upgrades.

This Prado 250 Altitude came to us for a complete transformation. The goal: keep everyday practicality while unlocking serious off-grid touring performance. Here’s how we built it into the ultimate touring Prado.

Touring Fit-Out Overview

We started with the essentials that every great touring rig needs: storage, power, towing, and communications.

• RV Drawer System – A high-quality RV Storage Solutions system forms the backbone of the build. It provides organised storage, a flat platform, and clever compartments to keep gear tidy.

• 40L EvaKcool Fridge – Integrated into the drawer system for easy access to food and drinks on the road.

• 200Ah Invicta Super Slim Battery – A powerful lithium battery hidden under the drawers, supplying all the off-grid power needed.

• REDARC Alpha 50 DC-DC Charger – Set to 25A for safe and efficient charging, with full app control and jump-start capability.

• 2000W REDARC Inverter – Powering 240V appliances through GPOs in the rear.

• ARB Twin Pump Compressor – Mounted neatly in the rear guard, giving onboard air without sacrificing storage.

• GME Communications System – Reliable UHF radio and antenna setup with our custom Accelerate mounting solutions.

• REDARC TowPro Elite V3 – A proven trailer brake controller paired with custom wiring and trailer plugs, making towing safe and simple.

RV Storage Solution Drawer System

The drawer system is the single biggest upgrade in this build.

• Flat Top Platform – Works perfectly for daily life, making loading groceries, kids’ bags, or even a pram easy. For touring, it doubles as a strong base for camping gear.

• Lockout Drawers – Full-extension drawers with secure lockouts make storing and accessing recovery gear, tools, cooking gear, or wetsuits simple.

• Vented Compartments & Side Pockets – Space behind the fridge and wing panels is ideal for storing lesser-used items like recovery straps or spare parts.

• Factory Look Finish – With the Black Pack option, the drawers blend seamlessly with the interior and look like a Toyota factory option.

This setup balances practicality with touring capability — it’s as useful on the school run as it is on the Simpson Desert.

Electrical System

A touring vehicle is only as good as its electrical system, and this Prado 250 is set up to handle anything.

• 200Ah Invicta Super Slim Lithium Battery – Hidden under the drawers, this battery provides huge capacity while keeping the install neat and space-efficient.

• REDARC Alpha 50 DC-DC Charger – Set to 25A for this build, but capable of 50A. Features include:

  • Jump-Start Function – Recharge your starter battery in around 15 minutes via the app.

  • Green Priority – Prioritises solar input before drawing from the alternator.

  • Heat Tolerance – Tested in our own vehicles, the Alpha runs cool even in enclosed installs.

• 2000W REDARC Inverter – Mounted to the rear of the drawers and wired to GPOs, it allows you to run appliances like coffee machines, laptops, or tools.

• Victron 15A Charger – Perfect for keeping the system topped up when parked at home or at a powered campsite.

• Fuse Assemblies – Installed neatly and safely to protect all circuits.

This system is app-controlled, so there’s no need for extra monitoring screens cluttering the dash.

Compressor Mount

We fitted an ARB Twin Pump Compressor, but instead of taking up drawer space, it’s mounted in the rear guard behind the taillight.

• Smart Positioning – Keeps both side compartments free for storage.

• Easy Access – The switch and air chuck are mounted neatly at the rear, making tyre inflation or using air tools simple.

• Discreet & Tidy – Out of sight, but always ready when needed.

Favourite Features

While this Prado is packed with upgrades, a few standouts make a huge difference day-to-day:

• 40L EvaKool Fridge – Keeps food and drinks cold without dominating the space. Downsizing unlocks even more storage underneath.

• Pull-Out Table – Positioned for easy inverter access, perfect for coffee stops or camp meal prep.

• Black Pack Drawer Finish – Sleek, carpet-wrapped edges that make the install look OEM.

• Cupholder Insert Switch Panel – Includes USB-C, 12V socket, Anderson out, and solar input. Plug in accessories or solar panels without leaving doors open.

Towing Setup

No touring vehicle is complete without a strong towing system. This Prado 250 got:

• REDARC TowPro Elite V3 – Mounted on the dash for easy access, giving smooth and safe trailer braking.

• 12-Pin Trailer Plug & Isolated Anderson – Allows the caravan’s batteries to charge while driving, cutting off automatically when the ignition is off.

• Custom Bracket – Includes extra provisions for Safety Dave, Wazza, and airbags, so the customer can easily expand later on.

This setup means the Prado is ready for towing a camper trailer, hybrid van, or full caravan from day one.

Communications

Reliable communications are vital for touring. For this Prado, we fitted our Accelerate Communications Bundle, which includes:

• Handpiece Bracket – Designed in-house by Liam, clips in with no drilling required.

• GME XRS Connect Pack – Industry-leading UHF radio system.

• Rear Antenna Mount – Positioned at the back for optimal range.

• UHF Body Bracket – Mounted under the dash using factory screws for a tidy finish.

• USB-C Power Pickup Harness – A custom piggyback plug we designed to draw power safely from the Prado’s accessory USB-C feed. This ensures it’s fused properly and won’t interfere with critical systems.
